For the last three performances of a run that also launched the Verdi Festival, Placido Domingo took over in the title role. It was interesting to compare and contrast his interpretation with that of José Carreras, who created the part in the Moshinsky production. Carreras's fundamentalist preacher seemed innocent and un-worldly, if not other-worldly, and so quite likely not to have noticed that something was amiss in his marriage.
